In 2015, the Legislature provided funding for WSDOT to improve mobility and access at the State Route 9/204 intersection in Lake Stevens. Congestion at this intersection affects Snohomish County commuters as well as regional and freight traffic.
Early planning and design work resulted in a preferred alternative design for the SR 9/SR 204 intersection. During this phase, the project team conducted Stakeholder Advisory Group meetings, open houses, business forums, and community outreach to ensure the final design incorporated community priorities and met the project needs.
The project team is advancing design and construction of the preferred alternative design, featuring roundabouts, added lanes, and improved access points to improve traffic flow. Construction will occur in stages.
Construction of stage one, which included a new southbound lane near Market Street is complete.
The second stage, which includes construction of a northbound lane between 4th Street Southeast and 4th Street Northeast will begin in late spring 2021.
The project team is continuing to refine the design for the third stage which will include construction of the roundabouts.
