Washington State has implemented a clear and structured classification system for electric-assisted bicycles, commonly known as e-bikes. This system categorizes e-bikes into three distinct classes based on their motor functions and maximum speeds. Understanding these classifications is essential for adhering to regulations and making informed decisions about where and how to ride these bicycles.
Electric-Assisted Bicycle Classes in Washington
Class 1
- Pedal-assist only (motor assists only while pedaling)
- Motor stops assisting at 20 mph
- Allowed on most bike paths and trails unless otherwise restricted
Class 2
- Throttle-assisted (motor can propel the bike without pedaling)
- Motor stops assisting at 20 mph
- Generally allowed on bike paths and improved trails
Class 3
- Pedal-assist only
- Motor stops assisting at 28 mph
- Must be equipped with a speedometer
- Restricted from most bike paths and trails unless local regulations allow it
All e-bikes must have motors with a maximum output of 750 watts and be equipped with fully operable pedals.
For trail access and use: on state-managed lands, only motorized trails and forest roads are currently open to Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes. Local jurisdictions may have their own rules, so always check with city or county authorities before riding.
Electric motorcycles are not classified as e-bikes and are treated like traditional motorcycles:
- Requires a motorcycle endorsement, registration, and insurance.
- Not allowed on bike paths or non-motorized trails.
- Governed by standard motor vehicle laws.
